HOUSTON, Texas -- Two local cities have been named some of the safest places to live.

League City

League City is the 68th safest city in the nation and the seventh safest city in the state according to a report by CQ Press. The publishing company releases an annual City Crime Rankings reference book, a study of more than 430 cities.

The news comes as no surprise to Mayor Tim Paulissen. “One of the reasons people choose to live and do business in League City is because it is a safe community. I'm extremely proud of the work our police department does to keep our residents, visitors and property safe, and it’s great to see statistics that support our reputation as one of the area’s safest cities,” said Paulissen.

Police Chief Michael Kramm credits technology and education as a few of the reasons for the city’s low crime rates. “Our police department strives to be proactive and to educate citizens to help prevent crimes before they happen. We also have an outstanding team that uses technology to track crime trends, make best use of our crime fighting resources, and give our officers the information they need to put the criminals behind bars,” said Kramm.

The study ranked the cities using 2011 FBI data on murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft. The City Crime Rankings reference book only ranks cities with populations greater than 75,000. This was the first year League City was included in the study.

Friendswood

Neighborhood Scout, a national data research firm, has recently named Friendswood the 20th Safest City in America in 2013 based on their latest research. The recognition, calculated on cities with at least 25,000 persons, is based on the total number of crimes per 1,000 residents. According to Neighborhood Scout, Friendswood is the second safest city in the State of Texas, and one of only five in Texas rated in the nation’s top 100 safest.

The Friendswood Police Department recently released its 2012 Annual Crime Report, which lists Friendswood as having one of the lowest number of crime rates per 1,000 residents in the Houston Metro area, based on information reported by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The entire list of Neighborhood Scout’s 100 safest cities in America can be viewed at this website: http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/neighborhoods/crime-rates/top100safest/. The City of Friendswood takes pride in working to ensure that our community is the safest that it can be, and is proud to have been recognized at a national level.
